F16 THRIVING THROUGH MEANINGFUL
ASSESSMENT: MAKING EVERY QUESTION
COUNT
Subtheme: Pedagogy and curriculum
Crystal Afitu and Lee Gianfriddo, Victorian Curriculum
and Assessment Authority (VCAA)
(F to Year 10)
This session explores how meaningful assessment empowers
students to thrive in mathematics. We begin by examining
what makes assessment purposeful—knowing what to
assess, when to assess, and how to interpret results to inform
responsive teaching and improve outcomes. In a climate
where assessment is often overused, we will consider how to
maximise impact while protecting valuable instructional time.
Participants will explore the Digital Assessment Library
(DAL), a free, curriculum-aligned and research-based tool
designed to support effective planning, pedagogy and
reporting. Through authentic case studies from Victorian
schools, we will demonstrate how the DAL can support
engagement and planning at the individual, class, cohort and
whole-school level. The session concludes with a collaborative
discussion on next steps in using data meaningfully to support
all learners in mathematics.
F17 WEAPONS OF MATH INSTRUCTION
Subtheme: Innovation and inspiration
Andrew Lorimer-Derham, Think Square
(Year 3 to Year 10)
With just a deck of cards you can build skills and confidence
in practically any number concept. Addition, multiplication,
proportional reasoning, fractions, algebra, negative numbers,
powers, division, mathematical vocabulary and more!
This hands-on session will equip you with half a dozen
activities to engage a wide range of learners and empower
you to make them your own.
The activities in this workshop will use logic, reasoning and
creative thinking to bring number skills to life and provide
meaningful opportunities to work like mathematician…all with
a deck of cards!
Key takeaways:
1. Creative ideas you can immediately use in your classroom.
2. Tools and resources to help build skills and confidence with
number.
3. A joyful hands-on experience.
Key takeaways:
Remember:
1. Understand the key features of meaningful assessment and
its role in effective teaching.
This is a hands-on experience
2. Explore how the Digital Assessment Library (DAL)
supports curriculum-aligned, responsive planning.
3. Engage with real school case studies and reflect on using
assessment to support individual, class and whole-school
improvement.
Remember:
Laptops can be included, but are not essential.
F18 MAKING SECONDARY MATHS
ACCESSIBLE TO ALL
Subtheme: Pedagogy and curriculum
Tara Richardson and Jiahong Gong, Greater Shepparton
Secondary College
(Year 5 to Year 10)
Our presentation will show how we have made secondary
maths, in particular Year 7 and 8 Linear Algebra, more
accessible to students. We use the CRA approach with a big
emphasis on bar models and algebra tiles. Our goal is to have
students accessing as close to grade level content as possible,
utilising manipulatives and visuals. We have found increased
student engagement and confidence.
