When we think about extension and enrichment programs for
advanced students in mathematics, we tend to reach for the
same responses: acceleration towards VCE, richer tasks, more
complex modelling and applications. These approaches can
be valuable but they share an assumption that differentiated
curriculum content (made harder or more open-ended) is
what is needed. This isn’t necessarily true.
This practical session introduces one alternative: the
abundant, accessible world of competition mathematics,
where areas like number theory, combinatorics and classical
geometry have decades of carefully developed infrastructure
that many teachers have never been shown. We’ll cover
how to set up a problem solving club, pull-out program or
1:1 mentoring arrangement — including session structure,
catering to mixed ability among high achievers, and using
competitions as a program backbone — all without needing to
be the expert in the room.

courses from Financial Basics Foundation. Designed for
flexible classroom use, the short courses explore practical
topics including budgeting, banking, credit, debt, earning,
spending, investing, first cars, renting, and more. Participants
will see how the courses use real-life contexts, interactive
activities and assessment to build students’ confidence with
financial concepts while supporting curriculum-aligned
mathematics learning.
The session will also provide a brief overview of ESSI Money,
an interactive financial literacy game, and MoneyIQ, a
collection of short animated videos that can introduce or
reinforce key ideas.
All resources are free, on demand and mapped to the
Australian Curriculum.
