PROFESSOR HELEN
CHICK
EXPLICIT LEARNING
AND THE JOY OF
MATHS
Associate Professor Helen Chick is a mathematics educator
in the School of Education at the University of Tasmania.
Helen taught high school mathematics before completing a
PhD in mathematics, while teaching both mathematics and
mathematics education at the tertiary level. She then became
a full-time mathematics teacher educator, with 13 years at the
University of Melbourne prior to returning to the University
of Tasmania in 2012. She teaches pre-service and in-service
primary and secondary teachers, has developed programs
and resources for various education departments and the
Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers, and has
provided professional learning to the teaching profession.
Her research work has focussed on pedagogical content
knowledge in mathematics for teachers, the use of examples
in teaching, and statistics education. Her abiding passions are
mathematics and teaching it well.

IN SECONDARY
MATHEMATICS
Dr Claudia Orellana-Farias is a Lecturer in the School of
Education at Australian Catholic University (Melbourne
Campus), where she teaches mathematics curriculum,
pedagogy, and assessment units in undergraduate and
postgraduate initial teacher education programs. She
previously worked as a secondary mathematics and
science teacher and has contributed to research projects in
mathematics education. Her research interests include the
use of digital technologies in mathematics education, with
her PhD focusing on the use of Computer Algebra System
(CAS) devices in senior secondary mathematics classrooms.
Claudia is also a member of the Mathematics Teaching and
Learning Centre at Australian Catholic University, where she
supports the professional learning of primary and secondary
teachers.
