complex world, and mathematics teachers play a crucial
role in shaping this understanding. This session highlights
the growing importance of financial literacy education
and examines how mathematics can provide a powerful
foundation for informed financial decision-making.
Participants will explore innovative pedagogical and
curriculum approaches that make financial learning authentic,
relevant, and responsive to diverse student needs. The
session will also introduce a range of free, high-quality
resources that can be integrated into mathematics programs
to enrich learning and reduce teacher preparation time. These
include digital tools, practical classroom activities, and Talk
Money incursions, which offer engaging, curriculum-aligned
experiences that support student capability and confidence.
Teachers will leave with practical strategies and adaptable
resources to strengthen financial literacy outcomes in their
classrooms.

Using real-world contexts and materials are critical for
engaging learners and providing the purpose for learning
about how to understand, use and apply maths in the real
world. Contexts taken from the real-world provide numerous
benefits in enhancing our learners’ successful learning and
understanding of numeracy and maths skills—and can help
overcome learners’ anxiety to the world of mathematics
through engaging their hearts, hands and minds. This
includes starting off with an authentic, real-world context or
situation. This session will look at why and how this works in
practice, both in your planning and in your teaching. It will use
examples such as medicine, food and sport to illustrate how
this can work.
