Have you ever reached independent practice in a
mathematics lesson only to hear students say, ‘I don’t know
where to start?’ This session explores the ongoing shift within
the Elevation Secondary College mathematics faculty from
passive learning to active participation through structured
opportunities to respond. We are excited to share how
students have responded to this change, with increased
confidence, enthusiasm, and engagement. Students
are actively racing to practise and share their responses.
Combining practical classroom strategies with researchinformed discussion, the session includes video examples
from Years 7–11 demonstrating routines for strategies
such as mini-whiteboards, pair-share, choral response, and
voting options. Participants will learn how these responsive
teaching tools surface misconceptions in real time, support
error correction and feedback, and promote mathematical
reasoning. We will also examine the barriers encountered,
the refinements made, and the ongoing work our team
continues to undertake to strengthen active participation in
mathematics classrooms.
