SESSION B: Thursday, 12.10pm-1.10pm (cont.)
B34 FROM PROFICIENCY TO
ACCELERATION: EXTENDING YEAR 10
STUDENTS ABOVE EXPECTED-LEVEL
Sub-category: Mathematical content and concepts
Fatima Farooqui, Point Cook Senior Secondary College
Y9 - Y10
This presentation outlines a targeted, evidence-informed
approach to extending high-achieving Year 10 Mathematics
students to an Above Expected Level, aligned with
VCAA standards. Students ready for acceleration were
identified through ongoing assessment and supported
using a structured two-phase model. Student progress was
systematically tracked using a purpose-built spreadsheet,
enabling timely instructional decisions and the identification
of readiness for acceleration and extension. Phase One
developed deep conceptual understanding and procedural
fluency through carefully managed acceleration. Instruction
incorporated deliberate practice and ongoing formative
assessment, ensuring increased pace strengthened rather
than compromised conceptual understanding. In Phase
Two, students transitioned into differentiated extension
pathways aligned with their intended Year 11 VCE subjects,
including algebraic modelling for Mathematical Methods
and applied problem-solving, data analysis, and real-world
contexts for General Mathematics. The session will share
practical classroom strategies, implementation insights,
and transferable approaches that help teachers extend
high-achieving students while maintaining challenge within
an evidence-informed mathematics program through
sustainable classroom practice and measurable student
outcomes.
Key takeaways:
1. Targeted acceleration of high-achieving students can lift
performance to an Above Expected Level.
2. Securing strong mastery of Year 10 content is essential
before introducing extension.
3. Differentiating pathways aligned to VCE General
Mathematics and Mathematical Methods improves readiness,
confidence, and success in senior mathematics.

B35 FINANCIAL MATHS BY MAFFSGURU AND
NELSON VICMATHS
Sub-category: Mathematical content and concepts
Darren Smyth, Camberwell Girls Grammar School,
Robert Yen, Nelson Cengage
Y11 - Y1
Darren and Robert share their teaching strategies for this
General Maths topic using questions from this year’s VCE
exam. They will present practical ideas, what not to do,
calculator shortcuts and exam hacks. What types of exam
questions do VCAA ask and what errors do students make?
Join us for some useful discussion.
Key takeaways:
1. Teaching strategies for Financial Maths using questions
from this year’s VCE exam.
2. Practical ideas, what not to do, calculator shortcuts and
exam hacks.
3. Knowing what types of exam questions VCAA ask and
what errors do students make?
