C22 AI AND MATHEMATICAL
METHODS: THREE PRACTICAL
CONTEXTS
learning units that cater to the needs of low and high
mathematical ability of their students.
Key takeaways:
1. Teachers will gain an understanding of how to create and
structure lesson activities that incorporate the ConcretePictorial-Abstract approach in learning and teaching
mathematical concepts and graphing technology that allow
students to construct and co-create advanced mathematical
learning and concepts from their existing mathematical
knowledge and understandings.
Sub-category: Digital technologies
Remember:
•
a teaching and learning activity related to numerical
methods for solving equations, where students interpret
and critique AI-generated continuation steps in a
procedure
•
a task focused on mathematical modelling with functions,
where different possible models are explored and
compared, and
•
consolidation and review work for an end-of-unit
examination.

In this session we will consider three example contexts where
AI could support mathematics learning in Mathematical
Methods:
TI-Nspire CX Graphing Calculator or Software is preferred

This workshop explores engaging and creative approaches to
teaching Number through culturally relevant and hands-on
learning experiences. Teachers will investigate how student
interests, such as Pokémon, can be used to build meaningful
mathematical connections, alongside the use of mathematical
picture books and Lego based tasks to support rich number
exploration. The session focuses on increasing student
engagement, confidence, and participation by providing
practical strategies that make mathematics accessible,
interactive, and connected to students’ lives. Participants will
leave with ideas and resources that can be adapted across a
range of classroom contexts.
The session will involve participants working through and
discussing these examples, with attention to the mathematical
thinking they can support, the limitations that need to be
managed, and the ways teachers might adapt them for their
own classes. Participants will also be invited to share their own
classroom experiences and questions.
Key takeaways:
1. Sample activities and tasks for use of AI in Mathematical
Methods
2. Ideas from discussions with other teachers on opportunities
and challenges for AI use
3. Some approaches for possible AI use in Mathematical
Methods
Key takeaways:
Remember:
1. Explore how student interests can strengthen engagement
in mathematics.
Please bring along a laptop with access to AI.
2. Use Pokémon, picture books and Lego to support rich
mathematical thinking.
3. Implement practical strategies to encourage active
participation in mathematics.
Remember:
All resources will be provided.
