Algebra is seen as a difficult and stressful topic by too many
students and too many staff. This should NOT be the case.
It should be seen as a time-saving, and maths knowledge
facilitating, set of interrelated skills, grounded in reality; not a
list of increasingly abstract unconnected dot points.
The presenter will outline a pedagogy and related strategies
for teaching algebra. It is one that he has used when either
introducing algebra to students unfamiliar with the skill, or
reintroducing it to students who have seen it before but
‘don’t get it’, or shown to staff panicking about what they are
supposed to do.

Participants will explore how the dynamic features of
TI-Nspire technology can make sampling distributions and
hypothesis testing more accessible, visual, and conceptually
meaningful.
Through simulation and dynamic visualisation, the session
highlights key ideas underpinning the central limit theorem
and builds students’ understanding of variability, sampling
distributions of the sample mean, and statistical inference including intuitive ways to visualise p-values and hypothesis
tests.
Participants will leave with practical strategies and activities
that can be readily adapted for VCE Specialist Maths or IB
Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation.
